UW Researchers need a union to stop harassment and discrimination at work and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
Across the country, academic workers are unionizing at a record pace to equalize the power relationship between employer and employee. Discrimination and harassment are pervasive in academia, an industry that is second only to the military in sexual harassment rates. By building power through organizing and collective bargaining, together we can:
-
negotiate better wages and benefits,
-
win stronger recourse against belittling or abusive treatment,
-
improve job stability and equity in career advancement,
-
and promote a supportive and inclusive culture.
This page documents individual experiences that represent patterns of discrimination and harassment that have occurred and continue to occur across UW, as well as strategies used by unionized academic workforces to combat these pervasive problems. Unionizing as UAW 4121 / UW Researchers United is the most powerful collective action UW Researchers can take to make lasting changes to the inequities, discrimination, and harassment persistent in UW’s academic culture.
