General Meeting recap
In the General Meeting tonight, we covered the progress we made from our election, opened the nomination period for electing a Bargaining Committee and discussed important workplace issues quickly that people would like to address in bargaining. We noted that we have now received our interim certification, formalizing our choice to unionize!
We will soon deliver our first request to bargain, and so need to elect a Bargaining Committee of Research Scientist/Engineers A-4. All RSEs A-4 are eligible to join the Bargaining Committee. Bargaining Committee members work together to develop bargaining proposals, meet with UW management during bargaining sessions, communicate with the bargaining unit about bargaining meetings, engage in outreach/organizing to build power, and mobilize to win demands. There is no set number of Bargaining Committee members and everyone is encouraged to participate in a way they are able. No bargaining experience is required, and a wide range of research, work experience, and representation is encouraged. You can accept nomination here. The nomination period will end on Thursday 6/23 at 5pm PDT, after which time we will elect the nominees in a unit-wide vote via email.
In the meantime, a group of RSEs are working on drafting Initial Bargaining Demands, which RSEs A-4 will have the opportunity to sign on to ratify shortly after the Bargaining Committee is elected. The Initial Bargaining Demands are broad-picture descriptions (a mission-statement of sorts) of how we want to make changes and what we want our fair and equitable contract to look like.
